The A-Z Glossary of Toilet Seat Manufacturing Terms
Sourcing sanitary ware involves a lot of technical jargon. To help our B2B partners navigate specifications and communicate effectively with factories, Fujian Chuangshi Sanitary has compiled this essential glossary of manufacturing terms.
B
Bamboo (Carbonized)
A sustainable material made from bamboo strips. “Carbonized” refers to a steaming process (200°C) that darkens the color and removes sugars to prevent mildew and mold.
Bottom Fixing
A traditional installation method where the bolt is inserted through the toilet bowl holes and tightened with a nut from underneath. Requires an “open-back” toilet pan.
C
Compression Molding
The manufacturing process used for MDF and Duroplast seats. Raw material (powder or wood flour) is placed in a heated metal mold and subjected to high tonnage pressure to form a dense, hard shape.
D
DIN 19516
The German/European standard for toilet seats. It specifies requirements for dimensions, strength (e.g., 150kg load test), and durability. Chuangshi products are designed to meet this standard.
Duroplast (UF / Urea-Formaldehyde)
A high-quality thermosetting plastic. It is scratch-resistant, UV-stable (doesn’t yellow), and has a ceramic-like cold touch and hardness. Also known as “UF” or “Urea”.
E
Expansion Toggle (Blind Hole Fixing)
A specialized fixing hardware used for Top Fixing. It consists of a rubber or plastic sleeve that expands inside the ceramic hole as the screw is tightened, anchoring the seat without needing access to the bottom.
F
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
An international certification system that ensures wood and bamboo products come from responsibly managed forests. Chuangshi offers FSC-certified options for our wooden product lines.
H
HDF (High-Density Fiberboard)
An upgrade from standard MDF. HDF has a higher density (>800kg/m³), offering better moisture resistance and structural strength for toilet seats.
M
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
An engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers combined with wax and a resin binder. It is the core material for our “Molded Wood” seats.
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
The lowest quantity of a certain product that a supplier is willing to sell. For wholesale toilet seats, this is typically 500-1000 pieces to ensure production efficiency.
P
Polypropylene (PP)
A thermoplastic polymer. PP toilet seats are lightweight, flexible, and virtually unbreakable, making them the most budget-friendly option (“Entry Level”).
Q
Quick Release (Easy Clean)
A hinge mechanism that allows the toilet seat to be detached from the ceramic bowl with the push of a button (or two), facilitating easy cleaning of the toilet surface.
R
Rotary Damper
The hydraulic component inside a Soft-Close hinge. It uses the resistance of viscous silicone fluid to slow down the rotation of the hinge, preventing the seat from slamming.
S
Soft Close (Slow Down)
A feature where the toilet seat and cover close slowly and silently under their own weight, controlled by a rotary damper. Prevents noise and finger injuries.
T
Transfer Printing
A decorative technology where a design is printed onto a specialized film and then transferred onto the MDF seat surface using heat or water pressure. Allows for high-resolution graphics.
Top Fixing
An installation method where all tightening is done from the top of the bowl. Essential for “Back-to-Wall” and “Wall-Hung” toilets where the underside is enclosed.
